What is the Defence-in-Depth?
Defence in Depth provides the basic framework for nuclear and radiation safety by implementing diverse layers of protection at successive levels. It is the principle to ensure that the technology that we use in day-to-day operations is safe.
Most current work practices involve using technology to perform a given job or task. Defence-in-depth is a way of addressing the safety of the technology to people who use it are not injured or hurt.
How do you apply defence-in-depth?
Licence holders and applicants should refer to the International Atomic Energy Agency General Safety Requirements (IAEA GSR Part 4 - Safety Assessment for Facilities and Activities). The regulatory expectations for defence-in-depth are outlines in Requirement 13 of this document.
