ARPANSA provides calibration services for instruments used to measure radiation in:

  • commercial
  • medical
  • public sector applications.

Testing of medical and non-medical X-ray equipment

ARPANSA tests X-ray equipment to comply with Australian Standards, ARPANSA codes, safety guides and state requirements.

Diagnostic and protection-level calibrations for X-ray equipment used in:

  • Radiography
  • Mammography
  • Fluoroscopy
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Dental X-rays.

Electromagnetic Energy Measurement and Calibrations:

  • radiofrequency hazard meters
  • personal radiation monitors
  • Electric (E) field probes
  • Magnetic (H) field probes
  • power flux density meters.

Ultraviolet radiation calibrations:

  • UVR detectors

We also check X-ray equipment for safety and effectiveness and assess the attenuation properties of shielding materials to Australian Standards requirements.

Materials include:

  • lead-loaded plastic and glass sheeting
  • protective aprons
  • gloves
  • lead glasses.

Diagnostic and protection-level calibrations

Calibrations of diagnostic and protection level equipment.

Electromagnetic Energy Measurement and Calibration

We calibrate radiofrequency (RF) hazard meters, gauss meters and personal RF hazard meters.

Primary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory (PSDL) calibrations

ARPANSA provides calibrations of therapy dosemeters at 60Co and various orthovoltage X-ray qualities. These calibrations are suitable for use in conjunction with a Code of Practice to measure the absorbed dose to water in a radiotherapy beam.

Ultraviolet radiation calibrations

We provide calibrations of ultraviolet radiation detectors against National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable standard lamps.
