What we do

ARPANSA maintains diverse laboratory facilities including the newly built state-of-the-art anechoic chamber for measurements relating to hazard analysis, and calibration of radiofrequency radiation measuring instruments.

ARPANSA also facilitates Electromagnetic Energy (EME) research and measurements in the millimetre wave band (5G and new technologies).

Calibration services

Specific calibration services offered to industry and the public include:

  • radiofrequency hazard meters
  • personal radiation monitors
  • Electric (E) field probes
  • Magnetic (H) field probes
  • power flux density meters.

Calibrations may include any of the following test methods:

  • TEM cell
  • anechoic chamber
  • wave-guide calibration apparatus
  • for ELF frequencies, a Helmholtz coil.

ARPANSA is a NATA accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025) for calibration of Radiofrequency E-field, H-field probes and meters up to 50 W/m2 for frequencies up to 40 GHz and up to 100 W/m2 at 2.45 GHz with a calibration and measurement capability of:

  • ±1.0 dB from 100 kHz to 200 MHz
  • ±0.61 dB at 750 MHz and 900 MHz (probe lateral dimension not exceeding 5.5 cm)
  • ±1.2 dB from 900 MHz to 1.8 GHz (larger E field probes)
  • ±1.0 dB above 1.8 GHz to 40 GHz.

Calibration standards

The calibration service provided will be performed in accordance with the procedures described in the ARPANSA Radiation Health Services Branch - Radiofrequency Calibrations Quality Manual and the methods recommended by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) Std 1309 IEEE Standard for Calibration of Electromagnetic Field Sensors and Probes (Excluding Antennas) from 9 kHz to 40 GHz.

How the service works

  • A quotation will be emailed on request
  • All services provided are subject to ARPANSA's standard terms and conditions. Unless negotiated otherwise, goods will be dispatched to the originator within 10 working days after the nominated calibration date
  • All the measurements are provided with uncertainties that are traceable to local and international standards.

Please do not dispatch equipment until a formal quotation and Client Agreement Form has been received, then signed and returned to ARPANSA.

An invoice will be issued on the return of goods. Payment is required within 30 days of invoice date. A return consignment note should be included.

Extra fees

A survey fee of up to $234.55 + GST applies for faulty equipment when calibration is unable to be completed, or for additional work not covered under calibration quotation.
