ANAO report into regulation of Commonwealth radiation and nuclear activities
In May 2014, the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) released their report into regulation of Commonwealth radiation and nuclear activities
The ANAO examined the effectiveness of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency’s (ARPANSA) management of the regulation of Commonwealth nuclear, radiation facilities and sources, including ARPANSA’s compliance with its legislative requirements.
While this audit was not a follow up to the performance audit of 2005, the ANAO was able to assess the extent to which ARPANSA had implemented the recommendations from the previous audit and make further recommendations.
The ANAO found that ARPANSA was largely effective in managing key aspects of its regulatory framework and considered by licensees to be professional and service-oriented. However, the ANAO made four recommendations to enhance the agency's risk-informed approach, management of conflict of interest, and independent oversight for ARPANSA licences.
ARPANSA accepted the ANAO report and has since completed all actions required to address the ANAO recommendations.
