The image guided interventional procedure (IGIP) survey aims to determine diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for a number of common interventional and diagnostic angiography or fluoroscopic procedures:
- Diagnostic coronary angiogram (no significant disease)
- Diagnostic cerebral angiogram
- Barium swallow
- Gastrografin swallow
- Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, single lesion)
- Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR)
- Pelvic embolisation
- Tunnelled line insertion.
The procedure definitions are explained on the survey protocol data sheets. Participants choose which protocols they wish to submit and for statistical accuracy data for 30 patients (50 for cerebral angiogram) per procedure are requested.
To undertake the survey, participants must first register with ARPANSA. Registered participants will then be emailed Excel survey spreadsheets for completion and email return. Additional copies of the worksheets, for surveying more than one room, may be generated by saving the workbook as a new document.
Each compliant submission will result in a dose report being sent to the participating facility. All submitted data and reports will be strictly confidential between ARPANSA and the facility.
No identifying patient information is required or sought. This means that human research ethics approval is NOT required.

Sex | M or F |
---|---|
Age | To nearest number of years in years |
Weight | To nearest kilogram in kg |
Fluoroscopy time | Total screening beam on time (does not include run time) in the time format selected in the green ‘Unit Settings’ area |
Fluoro frame rate | Screening frame rate in frames per time unit as selected in the green ‘Unit Settings’ area |
DA time | Total acquisition run time in seconds |
DA frame rate | Acquisition frame rate during angiographic runs in frames per time unit as selected in the green ‘Unit Settings’ area |
DA Frames | Total number of angiographic frames acquired, does not include digital screening frames |
DAP | Total DAP (KAP) value acquired for both screening and angiographic runs in the units selected in the green ‘Unit Settings’ area |
Reference dose | System provided reference dose (for an isocentric interventional fluoroscope, the reference point is located 15 cm from the isocenter toward the X-ray tube), in the units selected in the green ‘Unit Settings’ area |
